"A Trip to the Beach - the story of my first visit to
La Digue Island Seychelles and why I keep going back"

On your first trip to Seychelles La Digue Island I suggest you do like we did. Take your bike and turn left at the Jetty. Yes rent a bike as you arrive. Then it is easier to see the whole island and at your own pace.

And you can do it all in one day. Have you read my story - part 1, A trip to the Beach on La Digue Seychelles Island? I'm assuming you're on a day trip and have no luggage to drop off first. So let's get started...

Just follow the coast past Anse Severe to the end of the road at Anse Fourmis. Stop on all the beaches along the way. This will take you an hour if you go pretty slowly. And if you like the beaches it could take you much longer but just push forward - there are much better beaches still to come.

And one word of advice: There are sometimes sand flies in that region. So bring along your preferred brand of personal insect repellent as well as sunscreen.

On our first visit, having reached the end of the road we headed back towards the jetty still on the coast road, now with the sea on our right. At Anse Severe there is an interesting little eatery and small guesthouse called Patatran Village. They serve nice Creole lunches - their grilled fish is especially nice and the fish is fresh - straight from the trap. So do pop in if you're around there at lunchtime.

Another good place for both lunch and dinner is La Digue Island Lodge. This is a full-fledged hotel with 60 rooms on a pretty nice beach. You'll find it on your right about half a mile past the Jetty.

After passing La Digue Island Lodge Hotel we headed towards the other end of the island to the famed Anse Source D'Argent Beach and the Sleeping-Giant Rocks. And stopped at the L'Union Plantation and the Paradise Flycatcher Reserve along the way. Did you download the map of la Digue?

To our mind it was an experience travelling back in time to a Seychelles of 50 years ago. La Digue is a charming little place but we had not seen anything that could surpass Praslin's two major attractions that we like so much, nor even come close.

With this thought foremost on our mind we took the road towards the interior, the single road that crosses the mountain. The road is steep here, so we pushed our bikes a good part of the way and even when going downhill the other side too as we didn't think it safe to rely on the brakes. But we were not prepared for what we saw next.

A gorgeous beach lay in front of us as we started our descent, and the most magnificent sea was bathing it. La Digue had kept it's secret from us until then. I love beaches and I could see straight away that this was indeed comparable to my yardstick on Praslin Island.

As we approached the beach my first impression was indeed reinforced. Grand Anse Beach on Seychelles La Digue is so incredibly beautiful. Nothing on my home island, Mahe with 70+ beaches, can compare to this.

We walked the length of the beach and snoozed on it too. After enjoying this beach for an hour we turned our attention to the low ridge to the left. I scrambled up among the boulders with the sea to our right.

There below, the second in a series of three magnificent beaches along this part of the coast beckoned and I say without hesitation that this one - this superb fine white sand stretch is indeed the best beach I've ever laid eyes upon. And I've been to hundreds, and not just in Seychelles. That's how we discovered Petit Anse Beach on Seychelles La Digue Island.

If your holiday takes you to La Digue Island Seychelles tell us what you think of this incredibly beautiful beach. But be careful. Yes those two beaches are beautiful but they are not the best place for a swim and it can be very dangerous at certain times of the year with strong cross currents and undertow.

But there is no denying the beauty of la Digue and its beaches. I can sit there for hours and just watch the waves tumbling in and washing that amazing beach. The sights and the sounds are just out of this world. Well enjoy it with the compliments of the people.

And remember Seychelles beaches are public by virtue of legislation, so access is and will always be free here, On my first visit it was completely deserted; now you may have to share it with half a dozen people but it's still paradise. Enjoy.

After finding this beach we spent most of the next two days there and our holiday came to an end much too soon but since then I travel to Seychelles La Digue Island often 3 to 4 times a year to enjoy this peace and serenity.

And my visits always take me to the incredibly beautiful Petit Anse Beach, which is, in my view, the very best beach in the whole of Seychelles. And ...

NO, there are no hotels on this beach.
