The most common misspellings "Seychelle", "Sechelles", "Seychells" and others are shown here below. Other than spelling, pronunciation is another issue. You see, there are two correct ways to pronounce "Seychelles" although I've heard at least ten. The two correct ones are:

• / say - shells /, or
• / say - shell /

Yes they are both correct. The final "s" may be sounded or not. But there is only one correct spelling... i.e. Seychelles.

Most of the confusion has been brought about because people are unaware of its roots. The name is derived from a French name, which was subsequently anglicized. Having been a French dependency before it was ceded to England of the 1800's, it was named after the French minister of finance, Jean Moreau de Séchelles.

Note the accent on the original French name of some 250 years ago. It was pronounced then, as it is now, / say - shell / - no final "s" sound, and spelled now Seychelles.

Can you now see the modern-day confusion with the name? To add to that, in the Seychelles Creole language it is spelled as "Sesel" and pronounced as / say-say-l /, so adding yet a little more confusion perhaps.

In German it is called "Seychellen" and in Chinese it is pronounced as / say-she /. This is understandable as there is no sound for a trailing "L" in Chinese.

If you spell Seychelles in any of the ways listed below then it is NOT correct! Of course as long as we are talking about the same place and country made up of 150+ tropical islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean. And as we talk about this country I hasten to add that it is not a part of Africa as some may suggest.
