Can I live in Seychelles with a salary of 500 USD per month?


I plan to work in Seychelles and if the islands are really wonderful and if I love it, I would like to settle there. Something I wonder and hope you can help or anyone can answer just this one question...

One hotel in Seychelles is offering me the salary of 500 USD - 700 USD per month to go work in your beautiful islands. Can I ask, with that salary can I live there??? Please reply.

Hi Tu
First you have to realize that $500 USD per month is a very meagre salary for a foreigner in Seychelles. But your question is a little vague though. Since you mention that your prospective employer is a hotel in Seychelles then I suspect that you might have been offered free board and lodgings in addition, perhaps on an outer island?

So maybe you can save your monthly salary while everything is provided free of cost. Otherwise know that 6000 USD a year is not enough to cover your basic needs. Yes it is very little.

Everything in Seychelles is expensive including housing, food, electricity, water, telephone... And if you smoke and drink then you're in very big trouble.

Having said that, I must add that many come to Seychelles, from the west especially, to work as volunteers for short periods of up to 3 months, may be even a year, for just token payments or for nothing at all.

They come work in Seychelles just to get the chance to experience life in these incredibly beautiful islands and spend their off-duty days visiting the best beaches in the world and experiencing some great fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving. So in a way it's like an extended cheap vacation.

In the end it really depends on what you want for yourself. You must realize though that in Seychelles 500 USD will not get you anywhere as much as what you would get in Vietnam. The difference is as plain as night and day. Here the costs are relatively high.
