For years I've lived not far from La Digue Seychelles. I had been to Praslin, its sister island, several times but alas to the third significant island I had never been. My home is on the main island of Mahe.
I had travelled even much further to the lovely sand cays, Bird Island and Denis Island and even further still in Seychelles. But why had I ignored La Digue? Good question. But this was about to change...
My world was transformed the day I set foot on La Digue Island when I found out how much I had been missing all those years. I travel to this incredible little island at least twice a year now and often 3 times or more. "Why?" you may well ask. It's because it is such an extraordinary place - a place for peace and total relaxation, the place where you find the best beaches in Seychelles.
This is the story of my first trip to the beautiful beaches on the island of La Digue Seychelles. We decided to combine a holiday on Praslin Island with a couple of days on its sister island which is just 4 miles off and about a quarter the size of the former.

We had been staying at the Praslin Beach Hotel at Anse Volbert and arranged for a taxi to pick us up and take us to the Baie Ste. Anne Jetty. Through the hotel we also made a firm booking on the first ferry crossing that morning. So we set off early.
Within half an hour we were getting off the schooner at La Digue Island's Jetty. The sea was calm and with a gentle wind in the sails the ferryboat crossing was pretty smooth. The 75-metre pier led to the centre of la Digue, which was made up of 4 to 6 small shops, the Post Office and the Police Station all across a sandy dirt road from the landing stage at La Passe.
There was also a single shop that stood by itself at the corner with the pier on the seaside. This setting has changed a little over the past decade but this island hasn't changed much otherwise. It still has the same sleepy feel.
There were no taxis, no cars, no buses but the bicycles were there waiting to be rented out for the day or even the half day. Ox-carts were there waiting too. Our primary concern, on arrival, was not so much transport but where to stay. We had been told it would be easy to get lodgings on La Digue Seychelles island number 3 but we were still a little anxious...

We shouldn't have been - everything went well. We quickly made some enquiries and came across a gentle lady who invited us to follow her to her own guesthouse 3 minutes walk away.
As is the case here with everyone knowing everybody else, in the bargain we ended up being persuaded to take a bicycle to help us with our baggage. "How about payments?" we asked. "Not to worry," the lady said, "you're staying at my place - you can pay later" and so we set off, with her, pushing a bike loaded with bags.
The guesthouse was nearby and she showed us a room, which was comfortable and clean, so we booked it for 3 days. After she had given us some general directions, advice and the name of the fellow who had the bicycle rental near the police station, we set off to get our second bike.
We made a 3-day-2-bike deal which we felt was reasonable and we were off on our discovery tour of the island. We accomplished all that within an hour of having set foot on La Digue Island. So easy! No hiccups. And everybody was kind and friendly.
You do not need a map here just some general directions. But if you want one, you can get a free map of la Digue here. There is just one road along the coast, which goes two-thirds of the way around the island, one across the central hills and 4 or 5 short interconnecting roads behind the police station in the La Passe area.
What did we find? We had 3 days but we were in a hurry to get to the beaches. We saw every single beach but when we crossed the hills we were in for a nice surprise.
We knew we had found it - the best beach that we had ever been to. And we've been to hundreds of beaches on dozens of islands in the Seychelles including, Denis, Bird, Praslin, Mahe, Silhouette, North, St Anne, Round, Cerf and many others.
And since then, we have been to other islands and this is still our favourite beach! This is why we keep going back to La Digue Seychelles. You can follow the rest of the story in part 2 - A trip to the Beach on Seychelles La Digue Island to find out how we discovered the best beach in Seychelles.
