La Digue is a place for the most unusual holiday. It's a place where I personally go, several times a year now. I love it, and I keep wanting to go back as soon as I leave, but I stay with friends now when I visit La Digue. It feels like home. :).

If you are looking for the finest hotel in the world then you won't find it here. But if you are looking for something different - a great holiday while you travel back in time then La Digue Island is a good choice and you can have a restful stay. And not to mention that probably the best beaches in the world are right here.

Most of the places to stay in La Digue are tiny family run 4 to 8 units rated 2 stars and 3 stars. Those places are clean and all have fans and air conditioners. Wherever you stay you won't be far from the beach. Do we have a first choice? Not really.

After looking around, I must say they're all nice, some slightly better than others. In the end it will all depend on if they have rooms or not on your chosen days! Yes most of the time you won't go with your first choice

Of course if you're looking for something more upmarket that feels more like a hotel then it has to be the La Digue Island Lodge with it's 60 units. This is a 3 to 4 star establishment with a very long history. It has a swimming pool and a wonderful restaurant and bar - the perfect place for a tête-à-tête while watching the sun go down over the sea and over Praslin Island in the distance.

Best Seychelles beach - Ptit Anse La Digue

My personal recommendation though is for a day trip to this island then you do not have to be concerned with La Digue Island resort hotels. In this case you would come by fast catamaran early morning and leave on the last boat just before sunset for its sister island Praslin, where you could stay in a luxury hotel.

There on the latter, spend a couple of days. While La Digue is charming with breath-taking beaches the bigger island of Praslin has much better hotels, better roads, car rentals and great beaches too. So you sort of get back to civilization, as I like to put it.

While you won't find luxury La Digue hotels the island is absolute paradise. Make no mistake about it. That's where you'll find the best beaches of Seychelles, and perhaps some of the most amazing, and most photographed beaches in the world. La Digue is small enough that you can see it all in one day. But if you're on your honeymoon or just want to get away from it all, it's the perfect place for a week of complete rest and relaxation.

So if you want to take your time, relax and enjoy this island over a couple of days or more then the main hotel La Digue Island Lodge and some of its associated villas could be places worth looking at. You could certainly do worse. And their restaurants serve good local fare while they also offer international cuisine. But I must add that they are not situated on the best beach but on the beach all the same, and within easy reach of the best beaches.

And if you're on a budget you too can find comfortable guesthouses on La Digue, but some could be as far as 500 metres inland though this shouldn't really matter when you have your trusted bike and spending quality time with, and rediscovering your new other half. In this case you will cherish your stay in La Digue forever.

And please, don't compare apples to oranges. Even its sister island Praslin is very much different in it's offerings. Although you won't find super-luxury on La Digue many Hollywood stars and at least one former Prime Minister of England have graced some of the establishments on its shores with their stay, while they thoroughly enjoyed it.

And the ex-president of Seychelles has spent much of his holidays on La Digue too. So I sincerely believe you too could enjoy a marvellous stay on this amazing island if you so choose.

Go with an open mind and allow this unusual island to take you back in time and enjoy the unbelievably beautiful beaches - the main reason to go there in the first place.

And if you are fortunate enough to stay on La Digue Island a couple of days you should try something which you won't find in any guide book and nobody would be bold enough to offer you, so you'll have to ask. Ask to sample their local drink, "calou". This is unique to La Digue. Read more about calou here.
