Desroches Island Resort is one of the most talked about private islands resorts. It has earned an enviable reputation among the discerning, well-heeled travellers. And it is one of the most sought-after, exclusive island resorts among the Seychelles Islands and for good reason.

A holiday at Desroches Island Resort is a dream come true. Forming part of the Outer Islands of Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, Desroches is one in a chain of 29 small coral islands of the Amirantes Islands group that spans a distance of almost 200 miles of ocean.

And Desroches itself, which is the main island in that group, lies almost 150 miles southwest of Mahe. It is a completely flat, low-lying, coral-and-sand cay (key) and it's only a few hundred yards (metres) at it's widest. But the island is pretty long - almost 4 miles long (6.5 km).

And it covers an area just over 800 acres, putting it among the bigger islands of the Seychelles. This 4-mile-long stretch of coral and sand is covered in tall trees mostly casuarinas and ancient coconut palms. The lush green island is fringed by a pristine, fine white beach that stretches for 9 miles (14 km) around the island.

Yes, you'll feel like Robinson Crusoe here on this tropical island but you won't have to worry about being rescued with a paved runway for light aircrafts towards the western end of the island, and one regular, scheduled flight daily plus private charters.

The flight from Mahe on an 8-seater jet aircraft takes about 40 minutes. As you approach the island, your amazing experience begins when you spot it in the distance - Lying there all by itself in the peaceful cobalt blue sea, your inviting, idyllic, emerald-green retreat awaits.

From then on, it's sheer bliss. As you land in anticipation, you get a warm welcome at the tiny airport and a buggy takes you to the hotel reception to check in. Desroches hotel has only 20 rooms - all suites actually. But there are also 26 luxury villas on the island. The latter are relatively far from the hotel and located on the other side of the island. The airport runway separates the two.

You barely have time to orientate yourself when it's time for lunch - your first taste of a meal in paradise. The rest of your stay here will seem like a fairy tale. Is that heaven? Desroches is really secluded but you'll love it. You can take a complete break here. This place is so remote that there is no mobile phone signal. So you can turn off your mobile at the airport and start to really relax and enjoy your stay. But not to worry though, you still have a lifeline to the outside world with satellite phone in your room. And, even satellite TV!

It's a great place for a honeymoon or to celebrate an anniversary. Some say, although they expected it to be very special, it surpassed their wildest expectations by a wide margin. You'll have bicycles at your disposal here, to explore the island and kayaks are also provided to enjoy it from the sea. Desroches is small enough that you can paddle your canoe leisurely around the island in a couple of hours. But Desroches is much more than just island and beaches though...

The reefs will provide you with hours of snorkelling fun and some of the best scuba-diving sites in Seychelles are just offshore, hardly 20 minutes from the beach. The Amirantes is famous for its diving, you see. And if you come to Seychelles primarily for that, this is where you should be heading anyway.

The famous French underwater explorer, Jacques Cousteau, spent several months filming this unique underwater world of the Amirantes for his epic, "The Silent World." Diving in the Amirantes is among the best in the world, while for solely diving or fishing holidays in Seychelles, you can enjoy these waters best on live-aboard yachts.
