Denis Island Seychelles is a flat sand cay (key) of 375 acres (142 hectares) situated around 60 miles north of Victoria. It is twice as big as Bird Island and about 20 miles to the east of the latter. Grouped together as the northern islands Bird and Denis have much in common.
My first visit to Denis Island Seychelles was in the 1980's. It is a place where I can thoroughly relax and enjoy the moment - a place where you are at one with the world and at peace.
It is a private island that was owned by a French businessman for some 25 years but more recently some local entrepreneurs have purchased it. Since then the island lodge has been upgraded to 4-star-superior category and the 25 cottages and villas on the island have been refurbished providing every comfort you need for a memorable and relaxing holiday in Seychelles.
It has a grass-covered airstrip that physically separates the island in two. On the smaller half is where you find most of the traditional island activities, which is essentially some mixed farming. And coconuts are still processed there and dried in the same way it was done a hundred years ago.
So here you can see the way of life on these islands of Seychelles almost unchanged after a century. But now with the island's economy centring around tourism, agriculture, mostly in coconut and copra production, is becoming less and less important.

Denis Island is served by twin-prop light aircrafts that fly regularly, 6 days a week now, direct from Mahe. Flight time is 30 minutes. You may find additional connections via Bird Island that has daily flights from Mahe's international airport. Additionally you could charter a helicopter or a yacht from Mahe and visit both of these northern islands. Both are worth a visit - at least a day trip.
The island is all green and covered in coconut palms and casuarinas. On the second half, the other side of the airfield, dotting the shoreline among the trees, there are some 2-dozen comfortable and cosy cottages, each sporting a large bedroom with en-suite bathroom, and a large open veranda and courtyard facing the sea. More recently the facilities have been refurbished and upgraded. Now you get 4-star-superior hotel comfort on Denis.
The 23 cottages, each designed for one couple, lie about 50 metres apart in two rows along the beach, so affording you privacy in the best location possible, right beside the beautiful white coral sands and all with a magnificent view of the ocean from your front porch.
Half of the cottages are classed "beachfront" and it means just that - stepping out of your front porch right onto the most beautiful beach. In the case of the "garden cottages", which are also sea facing and in the back row, it means you have to take 50 paces more to the beach. Otherwise they are pretty much identical and are all in superb location.

Apart from the 23 spacious charming cottages for two, you'll also find on the island two villas situated away from the rest - one a fairly large family villa and a much bigger executive villa both more secluded.
They were originally built as the residence of the former owners who were retired and so lived permanently on the island. Now any of the 25 units are available to you. And you can experience life like the former owners did... :).
The charming 375-acre sand cay has 5 km of beautiful white beaches for your enjoyment, and most of it deserted. As with the other sand cays in Seychelles Denis Island is absolutely flat and low-lying with an elevation of no more than 3 metres above high water mark. So exploring the interior of the island is easy and safe.
Most visitors to Seychelles never see any of the sand cays. When you go to Denis or Bird islands you'll be among the lucky 10% who have ventured further afield. You will be truly experiencing another world.
Conservation on Denis Island is a very important subject and they have there, a resident bird expert to administer the recent translocation programs, which involve management and monitoring of several very rare, endangered species of birds that now seem to be thriving on the island.
Those are birds that have been relocated from other Seychelles islands. They include the Seychelles Fody, the Seychelles Magpie Robin and the Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher. The massive effort involved is now starting to pay off.

And talking of birds, with the present population explosion of seabirds like the sooty terns on Bird Island those birds are spilling over and starting to colonise Denis Island now in 2010. This bodes well for birds and bird-watching holidays in the Seychelles.
Among other seabirds that you'll find here are the land-based noddy terns, the fairy terns, and the frigate bird in smaller numbers.
In years to come Denis Island could become an important part of the overall conservation success stories for Seychelles birds, just like Cousin, Aride and Bird islands.
And now, for a little advice: Remember this is wild country and you may not get on too well with the bugs, so bring along some personal insect repellent - your favourite environmentally-friendly brand - for a more enjoyable holiday. And this should be in addition to your sunscreen, for visits to any of the smaller islands in Seychelles.
And finally, check out here the various activities on Denis Island Seychelles that you can take part in on your holiday.
